My Tattoos & The Stories Behind Them

Getting a tattoo is no easy decision and something that takes a lot of time to think through - everything from the design stage to where you're going to get it actually done takes some serious consideration, oh and not to mention it's a huge commitment that'll be with you forever. I wanted to to talk you through my own tattoos and the reason why I made these lovely (in my opinion) designs permanent...

Kicking off my collection is the tattoo I got most recently, a mere two weeks ago in fact, for my 26th birthday! After hours and hours and hours of browsing Google and Pinterest I finally decided on this amazing Lotus flower mandala that I had been going back and forth with for a while, but just always came back to. I'd known for ages that I wanted a tattoo like this and I knew that I either wanted it on my shoulder or on my back. As you can see, I opted for the top of my back rather than my shoulder as I just liked the positioning a lot more - cue me buying loads of tops that featured a deep v in the back for me to show it off. It was the most painful of all my tattoos, I guess because it was going down and across my spine for the most part and there was a lot of shading and dot-work, but it's my favourite tattoo I have and being quite a free and independent person I thought it was apt to my personality.

This was probably the tattoo that I didn't really think through and, not that I regret it, I'm not sure if I would have got this one if I'd have been in different circumstances. I was with my friend Sophie in Southampton in between University lectures and we decided to head into town and stumbled into a tattoo shop - and so the swallow was born! I am glad I have it with me as it reminds me of my university years and I'm so happy I have something to remind me of those three amazing (expensive) years and the fantastic people I met there who I can say are still my best friends.

No doubt this is the most personal of all my tattoos, and the third tattoo I decided to get. It's hard to write about something that's so personal, even though all my tattoos have a story and a reason behind them, this one sits on my ribs and so on my heart, and there's a good reason why. My late auntie designed it for me, she designed it when she was happy and knew that I wanted it - someday, I wasn't quite sure when - I kept the design with my for ages, actually carrying it around in my purse, unsure of the right time and whether it would be too painful for me to get (mentally not physically). But two years after she passed away I finally plucked up the courage (with mum in tow) to go to the place where I went with my aunt at 18 to get my first tattoo and get a permanent piece of my aunt etched onto me for the rest of my life. I said at the beginning of this post that the Lotus flower is my favourite, but for different reasons this one is too. It's for Carol.

And last but not least is the first tattoo I ever got! I still remember the day I went into town with my two aunts, excited but insanely nervous at the ripe old age of 18 - of course we got there too early so had an excruciating half an hour wait until the tattoo place opened - but it was exciting nonetheless. They also got tattoos with me to mark the occasion and it's a memory that'll stay with me forever - my late auntie Carol also designed this one for me, the creative and talented woman that she was, and even though some of it is started to wear away a bit as it's on my foot (that happens on feet, hands and fingers as we obviously use them a lot) I still love it and show it off when I can.

I hope you've enjoyed this (bit more personal) post and if you're thinking of getting a tattoo and have any questions just leave it in the comment section below. See you Friday!
