The 11th of March was Mothering Sunday so I decided to hop on a train home and treat my Mum to a little bit of R&R and, of course, some delicious food (something we both have a strong interest in)! Mum and I are now becoming avid Afternoon Tea goers so it was pretty easy for me to choose to take her to something she loves so much..and obviously I saw a photo opportunity (sorry Mum). I opted for Hestercombe Gardens, as we'd already been there and both enjoyed it so much I knew it would be a winner! Hestercombe is based in Somerset, so if you're planning a trip to the South West, Taunton and the surrounding area in particular, I would highly recommend this place! Even if you're just looking for somewhere to stop off along the way or to take the dog out, it's great for all sorts of activities and has a lot to offer no matter how old (or young) you are!

But, let's talk a little more about the Afternoon Tea, shall we? The menu was different to the last time we went (I mean, that was when I was 24 and I'm denying that was nearly four years ago) but it was equally as delicious. As you can tell from the photos, we were in a beautiful setting. The Afternoon Tea takes place in the elegant Column Room restaurant which is where you can get a great view of the gardens, grounds and beyond. Even on a chilly March afternoon we could see for miles as we were lucky enough to get a window table (we went on a Thursday so it really wasn't busy, but I would advise booking if you're going on a weekend). The Column Room really is, as their website states, the prettiest room at the whole of Hestercombe and the perfect place to chow down and have a good catch up with your Mum.

When we arrived we had the choice of traditional or sparkling Afternoon Tea, normally one to go straight for anything with the word sparkling in it, this time I opted for a traditional Tea along with Mum and for the English Breakfast. I think where this Afternoon Tea stood out is that the staff were more than happy for my Mum to substitute tea (which she doesn't drink) for coffee - normally there would be a surcharge for this sort of thing so I was super happy that it wasn't an added extra. Don't get that in London, eh? Whilst sipping on our hot drinks, the lovely waitress bought over our tower of food and was more than happy for me to take photo's (some historical buildings are a little funny about that so I find it's always worth checking).

The bottom tier had our finger sandwiches (laid out the perfect width apart, might I add) so, after taking far too many photo's that even I was getting embarrassed, we delved in and started to work our way up this glorious food tower. With varieties such as cheese and red onion bruschetta, chicken and ham in a tomato sauce both Mum and I were super impressed with the selection on offer. Side note: you can also make the staff aware of any allergies, intolerance's or things you just generally don't like and they'll accommodate you so you can have the best time possible!

On to the next plate, probably my favourite, the selection of mini cakes! We had two of each type - this included a delicious strawberry mousse with sauce in the middle, a lemon sponge cake, white chocolate and coconut truffle and a yummy biscuit in the shape of a heart. I nearly did of cuteness overload. By this time the tummy's were filling up but, in my humble opinion, an Afternoon Tea isn't really an Afternoon Tea without scones on the top tier, so we had to give those a try as well. We got one plain and one fruit filled scone each, complete with a plate of butter, clotted cream and jam to add on to our scones. They were hard and crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside - the perfect scone!

I would say this is one of the best Afternoon Tea's Mum and I have been to, only rivalled by one we went to at the in London. If you are based in the South West or taking a trip there soon, definitely don't pass by Hestercombe Gardens! More info here.
